LC Ed Resources

The following questions were answered by Lactation Consultants (IBCLC), Lactation Specialists (CLC or not certified), LLL leaders, and WIC peer counselors. There were 22 respondents for this set of questions.

Regarding the types of educational services provided by Lactation Counselors, the most prevalent activity was Breastfeeding classes offered by 15 respondents (68%). This was followed by Staff & Continuing education by 9 providers (41%), which was pretty evenly distributed between the hospital – 6 (27%) and outpatient setting – 5 (23%). Seven counselors (32%) reported doing community presentations for schools and other organizations. Four respondents did not answer this question. Other services provided included:

  • Prenatal breastfeeding class (1)
  • Breastfeeding support group (1)
  • One-on-one counseling/WIC (3)
  • LLL meetings (1)
  • Flyers to OB/Gyns (2)
  • Phone calls/emails (1)
  • New parent classes (1)

The most frequently used format for education provided by Lactation Counselors is one-on-one education – 17 (77%). This was followed by Lectures offered by 11 providers (50%). Seven counselors (32%) reported doing conferences, while 3 counselors (14%) used a Lunch & Learn format. Two respondents did not answer this question. Other formats utilized included:

  • Classes (1)
  • Classes with videos (1)
  • None at this time (1)

Breastfeeding resources utilized by Lactation Counselors were varied. The most prevalently used resource identified was Videos/DVDs – 15 (68%), followed by PowerPoint presentations – 12 (55%). Both Pamphlets and Books/references were identified by 9 (41%) of counselors, while Journal articles were selected by 5 counselors (23%). Two respondents did not answer this question. Other resources identified included:
