Concerning the benefits of a regional breastfeeding coalition, all listed benefits were selected by at least 30% of the respondents. The three most valued benefits were: (1) Breastfeeding Resource Guide – 128 (74%), (2) Networking – 105 (60%), and (3) Website – 103 (59%). Three respondents did not answer this question. Other suggestions for topics included:

  • Local conferences (1)
  • Advocacy (1)
  • Direct assist/assessment of breastfeeding couplet (1)

All the proposed activities for a breastfeeding coalition were met with a very positive response. The three activities listed in order of selection: (1) Health fairs – 144 (83%), (2) Media promotion – 119 (68%), and (3) World Breastfeeding Week – 100 (57%). Four respondents did not answer this question. Other suggestions for activities included:

  • Breastfeeding support groups (2)
  • Education/conferences for nurses/office staff/students (4)
  • Parent education (1)
  • Monthly meetings (1)
  • Community outreach (1)
  • Promotion through OB/Gyn offices (1)

The choices for meeting times were fairly evenly distributed. The most frequently selected choice was evening – 70 (46%). All the physician groups, lactation specialists, and community lactation support providers all favored evenings by at least 55%. Perinatal nurses were more evenly divided between the times offered. Several respondents indicated more specific times, like lunch or early morning as their preferred time. One person suggested Saturday meetings. Having an “Other” option may have been helpful to get more information about these other possibilities. Twenty-five respondents did not answer this question.

The question of dues received a very definitive response. There were 130 negative responses (83%) and only 26 responses (17%) in favor of dues Eighteen respondents did not answer this question. Amount suggestions for dues included:

  • $5-10 (4)
  • $11-25 (8)
  • $26-50 (6)
  • $51-75 (1)
  • Unsure of amount (6)
  • Cheap, but enough to cover some basic expenses (1)
  • Not at first (1)

Other suggestions given:

  • Grant money for projects (1)
  • Donations (2)
  • Volunteers (2)
  • Different levels for professionals and laymen (1)
  • Stimulus money from the state and local government for the improvement and health of all newborns (1)

There were 70 respondents who requested notification by email, but only 58 of them provided email addresses. Names and contact information were provided by 68 respondents who wished to learn more about the proposed breastfeeding coalition.
